Douglas was born in December 1890 in Bradford, Yorkshire, England.1   Douglas' father was James Tomlin Petty and his mother was Eliza Firth.  His paternal grandparents were William Petty and Margaret Tomlin.  He had four brothers and four sisters, named Herbert, James Luth, David Faith, William, Florence, Sarah M, Eliza and Ida.  He was the eighth oldest of the nine children.  He died at the age of 2 in December 1892 in Bradford, Yorkshire, England.
