Mary was born about 1866 in Marylebone, Middlesex, England.1   Mary's father was George Lyon and her mother was Mary Isabella Lewis.  Her paternal grandparents were Fraser Erskine Lyon and Anne Guthrie. She had two brothers and four sisters, named George, John, Elizabeth, Rose, Alice and Amelia.  She was the oldest of the seven children.
