William was born about 1744 in Elworthy, Somerset and his baptism took place on April 8th, 1744.1 2   William's father was Richard Gadd and his mother was Sarah Washer.  His maternal grandparents are John Washer and <Unknown>.  He had a brother and a sister, named Richard and Mary.  He was the oldest of the three known children.
