George was born about 1868 in Belmont, Co. Durham, England.1   George's father was Samuel Armstrong and his mother was Mary Beadling.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Armstrong and Sarah Parker. He had three brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, Samuel, Newrick, Sarah and Elizabeth.  He was the second oldest of the six children.
