John was born about 1868 in Wolsingham, Co Durham.  John's father was Michael Hall and his mother was Hannah Bell.  His maternal grandfather was Joseph Bell and his maternal grandmother is Elizabeth.  He had five sisters named Sarah, Margaret, Mary, Isabel and Eliza.  He was the oldest of the six children.  He had a half-brother named Matthew.
