Joseph was born about 1879 in Tow Law, Co. Durham.  Joseph's father was Robson Bell and his mother was Sarah.  His paternal grandfather was Joseph Bell and his paternal grandmother is Elizabeth.  He had three brothers and three sisters, named George, Thomas, John, Elizabeth, Sarah and Mabel.  He was the fifth oldest of the seven children.
