Emily was born in 1873.  Emily's father was James Gye and her mother was Mary Anne Durnford.  Her paternal grandparents were William Gye and Sophie Keyte.  She was the fifth of nine children.  She had three brothers and five sisters, named Jeremiah, William, Joseph, Sarah, Florence, Elizabeth, Winfred and Hester.
