Mercè was born in 1930 in Barbens (Pla d'Urgell). Lleida. Catalunya..  Mercè's father was Benjamí Ortiz Castellà and her mother was Maria Giralt Cases.  Her paternal grandparents were Antònio Ortis Solé and Sra. Castellà Yyyy. She had five brothers and a sister, named Jacint, Ramon, Joan, Josep, Benjamí and M. Rosa.  She was the youngest of the seven children.
