Marcel·lí was born in 1899 in Vallfogona de Balaguer (Noguera). Lleida. Catalunya..  Marcel·lí's father was Pere Balasch Solé and his mother was Rosalia Torrent Droguet. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Jaume, Francisco, Cecília, Ramona and Dolors.  He was the oldest of the six children.
