John was born on May 28th, 1767 in West Kilbride and his baptism took place there on June 3rd, 1767.  John's father was John Motion and his mother was Mary / Janet Biggard.  His paternal grandparents were Andrew Motion and Janet Richard. He had three brothers and a sister, named William, James, James and Janet.  John and William were twins.
