John was born about 1865.  John's father was Thomas Watson Shand and his mother was Sarah Anderson.  His paternal grandparents were William Shand and Mary Watson; his maternal grandparents were John Anderson and Elizabeth Booth.  He had three brothers and four sisters, named William, Thomas, James, Helen, Sarah, Francis and Mary.  He was the third oldest of the eight children.
