John was born on January 23rd, 1849 in Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire.  John's father was James Linklater and his mother was Barbara Allan.  His paternal grandparents were John Linkleter and Elizabeth Murray. He had two sisters named Barbara and Jemima.  He was the second oldest of the three children.
