Alexander was born about 1887 in Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire.  Alexander's father was George Bain and his mother was Helen Warden.  His paternal grandparents were George Bain and Jane Baxter; his maternal grandparents were William Warden and Jessima Lindsay. He had three brothers named George, William and James.  He was the third oldest of the four children.
