Spence was born in 1727.  Spence's father was Andrew Monroe and his mother was Christian Tyler.  His paternal grandparents were William Monroe and Margaret Bowcock; his maternal grandparents were Charles Tyler and Jane.  He was an only child.  He died at the age of 47 in 1774.
