Lee's father was Elmer Wilbur Johnson and his mother was Martha (Mattie) Carter.  His paternal grandparents were Pyrrhus E. Peter Johnson and Joanna Orpha Campbell; his maternal grandfather is John Carter and his maternal grandmother was Mary Bowker. He had five brothers and four sisters, named Harold, Andrew, Harvey, Earl , Russel, Grace, Gladys, Myrtie and Merle.
