Abel was born in 1252.  Abel's father was Abel King of Denmark and his mother was Matilda of Holstein.  His paternal grandparents were Valdimir II King of Denmark and Berengaria of Portugal. He had two brothers and a sister, named Eric Duke of Schlesvig, Valdimar Duke of Schlesvig and Sophia.  He died at the age of 27 in 1279.
