Friedrich III. was born in 1699. Friedrich III.'s father was Friedrich II. Sachsen-Gotha, von and his mother was Magdalene Auguste Anhalt-Zerbst, von. His paternal grandparents were Friedrich I. Sachsen-Gotha, von and Magdalene Sibylle Sachsen-Weissenfels, von; his maternal grandparents were Karl Wilhelm Anhalt-Zerbst, von and Sofie Sachsen-Weissenfels, von. He had ten brothers and five sisters, named Wilhelm, Karl Friedrich, Johann August, Christian, Christian Wilhelm, Ludwig Ernst, Emanuel, Moritz, Karl, Johann Adolf, Sofie, Sofie, Friederike, Magdalene Sibylle and Augusta. He was the second oldest of the sixteen children. He died at the age of 73 in 1772.
