Paula was born on October 4th, 1849 in Kassel. Paula's father was Edmund Hartig, von and her mother was Julie Bellegarde. Her paternal grandparents were Franz de Paula Hartig, von and Juliana Grundemann-Falkenberg, von. She had three sisters named Julie, Franzisca and Marie Antonie.
