William was born in 1143 in , Shropshire, , England.  William's father was William FITZALAN and his mother was Isabel DeSay.  His maternal grandfather was Ingram DeSay and his maternal grandmother is Lettice DeMaminot. He had two brothers and three sisters, named John, Ralph, Agnes, Petronil and Alianore.  He is the oldest of the six children. He has a half-brother named William.
