Edmund was born on March 6th, 1842 in Bagworth, Leicestershire, England.  Edmund's father was Thomas Farmer and his mother was Mary Vesty.  His maternal grandparents are Thomas Vesty and Hannah Franks. He had four brothers and four sisters, named William, Frederick, Arthur, David, Julia, Mary Anne, Charlotte and Sarah A.  He is the sixth oldest of the nine children.
