Walter was born in May 1879 in Tennessee.1   Walter's father was Charles W Hosse and his mother was Anna Augusta Trauernicht.  His maternal grandparents were Henry Trauernicht and Johanna Knobbe. He had three brothers and a sister, named Alfred, Augusta, Charles and Alma.  He was the third oldest of the five children.
