Johann was born on December 17th, 1832 in Remels, Leer, Lower Saxony, Germany.  Johann's father was Jann Hinrichs Christoffers and his mother was Richend Anneeshen.  His paternal grandparents were Christoffer Johann Hinrichs and <Unknown>; his maternal grandparents were Annees Weyhen and Lisabeth Janshen. He had a brother named Annes.  He was the younger of the two children.
