        Van Amesfoort had a violent temper. As a result, he spent much time incourt and jail. In 1668, he was exiled from the colony for physicallyand verbally abusing his wife and mother-in-law. Although no directexplanation has been found, it is believed that this is the reason thatall of his children used the 'Van Steenbergh' surname. Across thegenerations, the family has used a number of variations to the originalname. Among these are Van Steenberghen, Steenbergh, and Stynbergh.
