John was born on May 19th, 1846.  John's father was Matthew Phillips and his mother was Anne Radford Scott.  His paternal grandparents were William Phillips Jr and Susannah Doss; his maternal grandparents were Robert Randolph Scott and Mary Martin. He had four brothers named William, Matthew, Thomas and <Unknown>.  He died due to natural causes or old age at the age of 73 on August 6th, 1919.  His burial was in Phillips Family Cemetery, Pinnacle, North Carolina.
