Thomas was born on October 16th, 1858 in Halifax County, North Carolina.  Thomas' father was Cpt. Exum Lewis Hunter and his mother was Gough Ann Bustin.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Conegenton Hunter and Mary Ann Lewis; his maternal grandparents were William Bustin and Gough Ann Whitaker. He had a brother and a sister, named Lewis and Fannie.  He was the oldest of the three children.  He died from a stroke at the age of 44 on November 2nd, 1902 in Fayetteville, North Carolina.  His burial was in Cross Creek Cemetery #3, Fayetteville, NC.
