Mariana was born on August 16th, 1839 in Matriz, Ponta Delgada, ilha de S. Miguel, Açôres - PORTUGAL. Mariana's father is José Claudino de Bettencourt Lemos and her mother is Maria Vianna da Serra e Silva. Her maternal grandparents are José Joaquim da Serra e Silva and Maria Eugénia Danchel Alves Vianna. She has two brothers and four sisters, named Carlos, António, Augusta Theotónia, Maria, Maria dos Anjos and Amélia. She is the second youngest of the seven children. She had two half-brothers and a half-sister, named Francisco Gomes de Carvalho, Julio Gomes de Carvalho and Maria Carolina.-
