Joaquim José de Medeiros was born on June 8th, 1816 in S. José, Ponta Delgada, ilha de S. Miguel, Açôres - PORTUGAL.  Joaquim José de Medeiros' father is Luiz António Cotta Arnaud and his mother was Maria Eugénia de Medeiros.  His paternal grandparents are Dr. Agostinho José de Sousa Cotta and D. Thereza Jacintha Arnaud. He had a brother and two sisters, named José Joaquim de Medeiros, Branca Guilhermina and Joaquina Ricarda Augusta.  He is the youngest of the four children.

Joaquim José de Medeiros and Margarida Augusta de Medeiros were married in a religious ceremony on July 4th, 1838 in S. José, Ponta Delgada, ilha de S. Miguel, Açôres - PORTUGAL.  They have two sons and two daughters, named João, Joaquim, Maria Isabel and Margarida.
