José was born on February 2nd, 1748 in Ilha Terceira, Açores, Portugal.1 José's father was Antônio (Antônio Cachoeira) de Souza Breves and his mother was Maria de Jesus Fernandes. His paternal grandparents were Manoel de Breves and <Unknown>; his maternal grandparents are Bráz Fernandes and Joana do Espírito Santo. He had two brothers and a sister, named Domingos Francisco, Tomé and Margarida. He died at the age of 96 on January 8th, 1845 in the Fazenda Manga Larga, São João Marcos .
