Jean Sherwin Tetalman

Jean was born in 1913 in Cleveland, Ohio, USA. Jean's father was Abraham Czerwinski (Sherwin) and her mother was Katie Zarzecki (Goldberg). Her paternal grandparents were Benyamin Czerwinski and Chana Rochla Kruk (Weinberg). She had four brothers and three sisters, named Lou, Joe, Ben, Solomon, Sara, Frieda and Katie. She was the fourth oldest of the eight children. She died at the age of 92 on October 18th, 2005 in Cleveland, Ohio, USA.

General Notes
- Jean Tetalman (nee Sherwin), an artist who worked in a variety of media, died October 18 at age 92.
  
  Her papercuts won her numerous accolades and awards. Mrs. Tetalman’s artwork touched on subjects ranging from Jewish holidays and folk scenes to scenes from the Torah, and she often incorporated her love of animals, birds, or flowers into the designs. She was also known for her handmade ketubot.
  
  An arts teacher for more than 50 years, Mrs. Tetalman was art director of Temple Emanu El for many years, supervising children’s art classes, lobby displays, and costuming for dramatic productions. She was also an expert in rug hooking, paper sculpture, batiking, tie-dying and designing appliqu�s.
  
  Mrs. Tetalman moved to New York to study at the Art Students League after graduating from Glenville High School. Following her return to Cleveland at the beginning of World War II, she helped run the family bakery, Sherwin’s, while continuing with her art work. She spent many of her summers teaching arts and crafts at Cain Park and was also the head of occupational therapy at the Jewish Convalescent Hospital.
  
  Mrs. Tetalman was predeceased by her husband of 57 years, Jack. She is survived by sons Michael of Decatur, Ga., and Kenneth; brother Sol Sherwin; and sister Katie Frieder.
