William was born on December 28th, 1860 in Spring Mire, Worcestershire and his christening took place on January 26th, 1861 at St Thomas, Dudley, Staffordshire.1 William's father was James Henry Harper and his mother was Elizabeth Haywood. His paternal grandparents were James Harper and Sarah Lees; his maternal grandparents were William Haywood and Mary. He had four brothers and four sisters, named Henry, Ezekiel, John, Joseph, Mary, Sarah, Dinah and Mary. He was the fourth oldest of the nine children.-
