John was born on November 29th, 1859 in Carlton, Yorkshire, England.  John's father was Charles  and his mother was Ann Elizabeth Brown.  His paternal grandparents were Christopher Gregory and Sarah. He had seven brothers named George, Henry, William, Charles  , Walter, Joseph and Frederic.  He was the second oldest of the eight children.  He died at the age of 70 on October 9th, 1930 in Elsie Shade's Home, Ellsworth, Kansas.  He was buried in Prairie Mound Cemetery, Ellsworth County, Kansas.1 1
