    From "Hale, House and Related Families, mainly of the Connecticut river valley" by Donald Lines Jacobus and Edgar Francis Waterman, the Connecticut Historical Society, Hartford, Connecticut, 1952. "To the research of Henry F. Waters we are indebted for a number of additional details [additional to SVT's book - DJT]., :-
    
    "Rachel d. at Farmington, Conn., 24 Oct 1653; in. at Fairsted, Essex, 10 Oct 1622, John Steele, who d. at Farmington, 27 Feb 1664/5, son of Richard Steele of Fairsted. They came to New England in 1632 and settled in Cambridge, Mass. John Steele removed to Hartford in 1635, and in 1636 was one of the eight men commissioned by the General Court of Massachusetts to govern Connecticut. He was the first Town Clerk of Hartford from 1639, and before removal to Farmington was Town Clerk there from 1645 until his death. He had settled in Farmington by 1652. He served as Deputy in the General Court at sixty-six regular and special sessions and at twenty-seven adjourned sessions, between 1638 and 1659. He md. (2) 25 Nov 1655, Mercy (Rusco) Seymour."     David W. Talcott quotes the following :- "Essex and the Lyon", by Winifred Ashwell, Braintree, Essex, 197 1, printed by Copystat Company, Barclays Bank Chambers, Braintree, Essex (Braintree 2133 1). Page 4 lists John Talcot and William Wadsworth, left in 1632 for not going to church. Also John Steel for not yet fully resolved in their convictions for kneeling at Communion. It stated that John left with wife Dorothy & 2 children. William left with wife & 4 children. These both left from Braintree & Bocking.
    
    DWT says John was son of Richard jr. Had a brother, George.

Rachel/4 TALCOTT87 (John3, John2, Johnl); born after 1595 in Braintree, Essex Co., England (Calculated from the date of her grandfather William SKINNER's will (1616) as still being a minor);88 married John STEELE, son of (--?--) STEELE, 10 Oct 1622 in Fairsted, England;89,90 died 1653 in Farmington, Hartford Co., CT.91,92 She was mentioned in 1604 in the will of her father.93 She was mentioned on 14 Aug 1616 in the will of her grandfather William Skinner.94 She was mentioned on 2 Mar 1617 in the will of her grandmother Margery Skinner.95 She was mentioned on 16 Sep 1623 in the will of her step-father Moses Wall.96
    
    John Steele was bom in 1591 in England.97 He was residing in 1632 in Cambridge, Middlesex Co., MA.98 Office(s) held in MA (Deputy: Mar 1634, May 1635, Sep 1635; "I appointed with Ludlow, Pynchon, and others to administer government over the great Exodus to Conn ... ).99 He was admitted a freeman on 14 May 1634. 100 He resided circa 1636 in Hartford, Hartford Co., CT ("was one of the original proprietors of Hartford; his home lot in 1639 was on Main St. just north of the present Athenaeum").101 He was an early member of First Church, Hartford, Hartford Co., CT. 102 Office(s) held in Hartford, Hartford Co., CT (Secretary of the Colony: 1636- 1639; Deputy many times from 1639 to 1657; Town Clerk: c 1639- 1645).103 He was residing in 1645 in Farmington, Hartford Co., CT. 104 Office(s) held in Farmington, Hartford Co., CT (Town clerk).105 He married Mercy Ruscoe on 25 Nov 1655 in Farmington, Hartford Co., CT. 106,107 He left a will on 30 Jan 1663/64 in Farmington, Hartford Co., CT ("mentions his wife Mercy, Samuel Steele, son of John, requests his 'much esteemed kinsman Mr. John Wadsworth, of Farmington, and Capt. Sam Talcott of Wethersfield' to be the overseers of his will June 10, 1685." Date should probably have read June 10, 1665).108 He died on 25 Nov 1665 in Farmington, Hartford Co., CT. 109,110 Children of Rachel/4 TALCOTT and John STEELE were as follows: 29. i.
