Mr Henry Raught

• General Notes
  • Married in Cooperstown NY.  They moved to Watertown, N.Y., where he followed the trade of a mason. From this place they went to the western part of Pennsylvania. where he engaged in the lumber trade on the Clarion River, at a place afterwards known as Raught's Mills, and where they died.
    
    Found on the 1850 US Census living in Heath Township, Jefferson County, PA.  Living with his wife Rosanna Raught (age 39, born in NY)

    Raught, Jacob          (he was born ~1826 in NY and listed as a lumberman with assetts valued at $2,000)  (I assume that he is Henry's brother since they share the same last name and he is living with Henry, but is perhaps his cousin?)

    The Raughts had a saw mill located on the upper part of Maxwell Run. They built a tramway or roller road from their mill, out by the Eisenman farm and down over the mountain to Daugherty's Eddy on the Clarion, bringing their lumber over this road by means of little cars or troughs which were loaded with lumber and shoved over the rollers by horses.
        This road was built of long streamers spliced together endwise and laid on a good foundation with hardwood rollers fastened into these streamers about four feet apart. The rollers were about two feet long with a groove in the center and the little cars were fashioned so the one part fit in this groove to keep them on the rollers.
       The next mill was one mile farther down the river at Raughts Mills where Hiram and Henry Raught built and operated an old fashioned "up and down" mill which was later taken over by Jerome Powell of Ridgway, and about forty eight years ago was remodeled by Mr. Powell, under the supervision of Fred Katz into a steam circular sawmill.
