Mr John Doane

• General Notes
  • He was rated highly in the estimation of Governor WIlliam Bradford and Thomas Pence. 
    Became a prominent man in the Plymouth colony and was given the title of Mr., indicating gental birth or college education...in 1633, member of the council and elected deacon evidently being a prominent Puritan before coming over, and he resigned as assistant, the Puritans being careful to keep church and state distinct...had frequent grants of land from the general court...his original Eastham grant was because he was one of the purchasers or old comers, but his various grants at Jones River, now Kingston, at Rehoboth, to the north of Taunton,etc., were because of public services...the inventory of his estate states his age as about one hundred years..."
    
    Was an Assistant in 1632-33, but he was "freed from office" on 2 Jan 1633-34 so that he could devote his full time to his church functions...served on various government committees, including the one that revised the laws in 1636, and he later became a deputy for Plymouth...was one of the men appointed to buy land at Nauset from the Indians, and he became one of the first settlers there..his earliest known wife was called Ann in a 1648 deed, but in a later deed (1659) his wife was Lydia...his inventory in 1686 was sworn to by and Abigail Doane, whom some have taken as a third wife (but possibly could be his daughter)...in his will dated 18 May 1678, he named his "loving wife", daughter Abigail, sone John, Daniel, and Ephraim and grandaughter Margaret Hicks..."
    
    Bound out two of the Bryant boys to good friends.  Thomas Bryant was bound out to Samuel Eddy, and Stephen Bryant (see Stephen in his own entry on this chart) to John Shaw.  Offering boys financial opportunities and connections independent of, and supplementary to those,k which their own parendts could offer them as they grew up.  The third Bryant boy, John, Being the youngest stayed with his mother and stepfather.
