John William was born on July 3rd, 1856.  John William's father was George Whitehead and his mother was Charlotte Parkin.  His paternal grandparents were George Whitehead and Anne Mary Unknown (Whitehead); his maternal grandparents were John Parkin and Elizabeth Howard. He had five brothers and six sisters, named George, George Stephen, Frederick, Alfred Isaac, Sydney, Ann Mary, Elizabeth, Mary Jane, Charlotte, Amelia and Cora Franciska.  He was the sixth oldest of the twelve children.
