Lydia was born in 1865 in Tenterden, Kent, England.  Lydia's father was Joseph King and her mother was Sarah Ann Wanstall.  Her maternal grandparents were Mark Wanstall and Lydia Luckhurst. She had four brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, John, Joseph, Albert, Martha and Ann.  She was the fourth oldest of the seven children. She had a half-sister named Philly.
