Sampson was born in of, Knole, Kent, England and his baptism took place in Or, Chevenning, Kent, England.  Sampson's father was John Leonard and his mother was Elizabeth Leonard.  His paternal grandfather was John Lennard and his paternal grandmother is Catherine Weston; his maternal grandparents are William Harman Payne and Mrs-William Harman Payne. He had four brothers and seven sisters, named Samuel (Lennard), Benjamin (Lennard), Samuel, Timothy, Dorothy, Mary (Lennard), Elizabeth (Lennard), Rachel (Lennard), Anne Lennard, Timothea (Lennard) and Anne (Lennard).  He died in Chevening, Kent, England.  He was buried in St. Botolph, Chevening, Kent, England.
