    PIENIK, BARBARANNE M., 53, of St. Petersburg, died Thursday (Dec. 27, 2001) at home. She was born in Obersdorf, Germany, and came here in 1975 from Newark, N.J. She was a receptionist and secretary at Aetna Insurance in St. Petersburg for 10 years. She was a member of United Church of Christ. Survivors include two sons, Kenneth A. and David A., and his mother, Irma Hildegard Smith, all of St. Petersburg; a sister, Linda Boh, Ponchatoula, La.; a brother, Frank Pennucci Jr., Raleigh, N.C.; and a granddaughter, Adrianna Nicole Pienik, St. Petersburg.     Barbara Pienik stood up at her computer, grabbed for her desk, cried "Oh, my God" and collapsed.
    The next 10 minutes would determine whether the 45-year-old working mother would live.
    When co-workers at the Pinellas Park auto-parts distributorship got to her, Pienik's heart wasn't beating, and she wasn't breathing. One colleague called 911 while two others gave her CPR. She had suffered a cardiac arrhythmia, just short of a full heart attack.
    "I thought I was going to die," Pienik recalled.
    What happened next might be part of a emergency medical revelation, a procedure that in the past year has doubled the survival rate for the nearly 1,000 heart attack patients treated each year by Pinellas paramedics.
    Pinellas Park paramedics did to Pienik what they are trying to do to every heart attack victim: They zapped her with electricity as quickly as they could.
    Using shock immediately to stimulate the heart into a regular rhythm could be the most important treatment in heart attack cases, according to an ongoing study in Pinellas County.
    Since Dr. Joseph Ryan, medical director of Pinellas' EMS system, began spreading the word in July 1992 about the importance of a quick shock, the chances of surviving a heart attack in the county have risen from 1-in-10 to 1-in-5.
    In Pienik's case, she was zapped by a pair of paddles attached to a cardiac unit within one minute of Pinellas Park firefighter-paramedics arriving.
    "Getting that first shock in is the most important," said fire Lt. Bob Dixon, who worked on Pienik when she became ill Aug. 26.
    "This is amazing that she survived," said Dr. Carlos Estevez, her cardiologist.
