Ruchla was born on December 5th, 1855 in Golub-Dobrzyn, Poland.1   Ruchla's father was Wolf Braun and her mother was Marya (Mariem) Drag.  Her maternal grandparents were Hersz Drag and Mindla. She had four brothers and five sisters, named Salamon, Lewin (Laib), Jakob Jozef, Abram, Myndel, Rana Temara, Elka, Gitla and Frayda.  Ruchla and Gitla were twins.
