Robert was born about June 1854 in Westminister Middlesex.1  Robert's father was James Purves (Scotland Farrier) and his mother was Eleanor (Ellen) Hume (b Wooler/Berwick).  His paternal grandparents were James Purves (Scotland Blacksmith) and Jane Morrison?; his maternal grandparents were William Hume (Ag Labourer) and Elizabeth. He had three brothers and six sisters, named James, John, Joseph, Margaret, Jane, Jessie, Ellen, Bessie and Annie.  He was the second oldest of the ten children.
