Joseph was born in 1847 in Poplar.1   Joseph's father was Joseph Lowman (Mariner then Rigger) and his mother was Susanna Quash.  His paternal grandparents are Joseph Lowman (shoemaker) and <Unknown>; his maternal grandparents were Andrew Quash (pos born Exeter) and Elizabeth Hall. He had three brothers and two sisters, named Andrew, George, Alfred, Jane and Alice.  He was the oldest of the six children.  He died at the age of 54 in 1901.
