Martha was born about 1846 in Barking Essex. Martha's father was Samuel Baxter (Fisherman) and her mother was Eliza Nash (of Stratford). Her maternal grandparents were Nash and <Unknown>. She had three brothers and a sister, named Samuel, James, Richard and Eliza. She was the second youngest of the five children.
