Thomas was born in 1905 in Salford, Lancashire, England.  Thomas' father was John HAMBY and his mother was Esther BURNS.  His maternal grandparents were James BURNS and Esther RAMSBOTTOM.  He had two brothers and four sisters, named John, James, Mary, Esther, Charlotte and Elizabeth.  He was the fifth oldest of the seven children.
