John was born on January 12th, 1903. John's father was Alfred Edgar Boyd and his mother was Margaret (Boyd) Elizabeth Archibald.  His paternal grandparents were John [Cullycapple] Boyd and Jane McAlister. He had four brothers and six sisters, named Ringland, Alfred, Unknown, William, Eleanor Beatrice "Bea", Aileen, Mary, Anna, Catherine/Kathleen and Margaret.
