Janet was born in 1826 in Paisley and her baptism took place there on June 18th, 1826. Janet's father was John Thomson and her mother was Agnes Tours.  Her maternal grandparents were William Tours and Janet Fulton. She had four brothers and a sister, named William, John, John, Alexander and Isabella.  She was the second oldest of the six children.
