James was born on March 6th, 1741 in Dunfermline and his baptism took place there on March 15th, 1741. James' father was James Thomson and his mother was Margaret Mudie. He had a brother and two sisters, named Robert, Margaret and Janet.  He was the second youngest of the four children.
