Niels was born in 1775.  Niels' father was Peder Jensen Sinding and his mother was Maren Michelsdatter.  His paternal grandparents were Jens Nielsen Sinding and Mette Christensdatter. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Jens, Michel, Mette, Gertrud and Anne.  He was the oldest of the six children.
