Helen's father was Thomas Shepherd and her mother was Helen Donaldson.  Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Shepherd and Barbra Scot; her maternal grandparents were William Donaldson and Issobell Givan. She had two brothers and three sisters, named Thomas, William, Isobel, Margaret and Helen.  She was the third oldest of the six children.
