Thomas' father was Thomas McMurran and his mother was Janet Babe. His paternal grandparents were John McMurran and Agnes Robertson. He had four brothers and three sisters, named John, William, Thomas, Andrew, Janet, Agnes and Euphemia. Thomas and Euphemia were twins. He died at the age of 3 in 1884 in Kilmarnock.
