Janet's father was Hugh McLatchie and her mother was Hannah Goldie. Her paternal grandparents were Hugh McLatchie and Agnes Reid. She had a sister named Elizabeth. She was the younger of the two children. She died at the age of 50 in 1888 in Old Cumnock.
